This multi-destination itineraries of 16 days has been designed for travelers seeking varied experiences and pleasures. The emphasis is on outdoor activities, limiting vehicle trips. You will walk 4 days for discover the wild, splendid natural site of “Eight lakes” accompanied by pack animals.
Then, accompanied by proud horsemen of the steppes you embark on a ride through the mountains of Khangai, and experience the main mode of travel nomadic country.
A camel in the heart of the dunes of “small Gobi”, you are immersed in the atmosphere of the great camel Gobi Desert to the south. Your vehicle links allow you to reach important and exciting cultural sights of the famous Orkhon Valley.
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar the capital city of Mongolia. Transfer to your hotel. You visit the Gandan Monastery, housing a 26 meter high gilded statue of the Buddha. Your tour also takes you to the Chinggis Khan monument on the Chinggis Khan square and the Museum of National History. In the evening, you will enjoy a Mongolian folk Music and Dance Performance. Then welcome lunch in a Mongolian restaurant.
Road to the west. First earth road and mongolian first landscape: vaste steppes, flocks, isolated gers and riders galloping on a small and sturdy horses. Khustain Nuruu National park is famous for the successful reintroduction project of the Takhi or Przewalski’s horse. Walk through the forests of larch and observation of these semi-wild horses in their pasture in the evening.
Drive to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of Mongolian Empire. This capital was built as far back as the 8th century, and was the city with the name “Takhil Shivee”. In 1220 Chinghis Khan declared it as the capital city of Mongolian Empire. Karakorum was destroyed a century later by the Ming troops. Visit the Erdene–Zuu, the largest and first Mongolian Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. This architectural gem surrounded by 108 stupas dates from the sixteenth century and is built on the ruins of the former capital.
Today we will visit the Ulaan Tsutgalan river features a waterfall, 10 meters wide and 24 high, which was formed by a unique combination of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes about 20,000 years ago. The fall is naturally most impressive after heavy rain. The waterfall is a popular destination for tourists.
In the afternoon drive to the steppe rider’s camp and meet with our horseman and guide at the end of the valley. You will visit at nomadic family and get a first introduction of their lifestyle.
Four days of trekking to the splendid natural setting of the ‘Eight Lakes “(Naiman Nuur) accompanied by pack horses. At 2200m altitude, this protected area with the huge crater of an ancient extinct volcano. It houses eight lakes in which are reflected mountains and coniferous forests that surround them. Rich flora and fauna characterize this region: sable, deer, argali, wild boar, ibex and musk, iris but also, gentians, bluebells, buttercups, edelweiss and medicinal plants. You progress from lake to lake in the heart of a wild environment and enjoy wonderful forest steppe landscapes 4th days on foot around a wild beautiful lake area, you will return and stay at nomad family where trekking start.
Now you will go on horseback. Accompanied by a horse keeper, you ride for 3 days through the beautiful hilly massif of Khangai. You will ride from valley to valley, in the heart of forests and bare mountains traversed by small streams. The vehicle supporting you for lunch, for the picnic and for evening bivouac.
Fourth day of horse trekking you will get to Tsenkher hot spring. The water is at 85,5°C. Curative water and amazing nature featured by wooden mountains make this an excellent place for relax. Night bath is great. Sitting in the pool drinking while seeing stars at the dark sky is one of the favorite activity in here. The open air-baths are recommended.
Drive to Tsetserleg. This capital of the Arkhangai province whose name means “Garden”, is one of the greenest and attractive cities. View of the city from a surrounding mountain. Visit the beautiful monastery museum Zaya Gegeen. Visit and walking in local market.
After lunch drive to Elsen Tasarkhai or “Little Gobi”, erected in the middle of the plains. The ecosystem of this park is particularly interesting, because the steppe and the taiga meet here. So, we can find a fauna and a flora that are characteristic of these two ecosystems, and also some wonderful landscapes, with the granite formations of Khögnö Khan. In there you can have an optional camel riding on the sand dunes.
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar. You will have an opportunity to shop at cashmere and souvenir shops.
Farewell dinner with your interpreter and driver in a Mongolian restaurant.
