Evasion invites you to take part in an exceptional expedition in the heart of the Mongolian Tsaatan territory
For 5 days and in the company of an interpreter and local Tsaatan guide, follow the steps of reindeer herders and immerse yourself in their unique universes and culture.
On horse or on reindeer, with packhorses, explore this isolated region, the taiga, where Tsaatan families who will invite you to discover and share their daily life made of picking, hunting, and… reindeer herding.
On the road back to Ulaanbaatar, discover the Khuvsgul Lake and its superb crystal clear waters, and Karakorum, the ancient legendary city of the Mongol Empire.
Arrival to the airport, meeting with your interpreter and transfer to your hotel. Visit of the city, of the Gandan Monastery and National History Museum. Early evening entertainment with an introduction to Mongolian traditional singing and dancing.Diner in a Mongolian restaurant.
Flight to Murun, capital city of the Khuvsgul Province. Stop at the local market to buy the last necessary items for the expedition.
Drive north northwest to enter the Tsaatan territory. The road is in bad condition and a halt for the night is necessary.Arrival in Tsaagan
Nuur the next day and meeting with your local Tsaatan guide and his family; last preparations before the expedition; diner and night at the camp.
Start of the expedition. You leave the camp on horse with your local Tsaatan guide and packhorses, in the taiga, in direction of the first reindeer herding family. The aim of the expedition is to encounter 2 to 3 reindeer herding families, share their way of life, learn about life in the taiga, and about reindeer herding; maybe an encounter with a shaman and an initiation to shamanism during a ritual. Unfortunately, such encounter cannot be guaranteed, nor planned. Return to the camp of your local guide on the 8th day
2 days drive back to the Khuvsgul Lake. Halt for the first night
Day of rest at the lake. Horse trek on its banks, through forest of pines and larches, flocks of yacks and sheep. Some izbas – wooden dwellings belonging to the herders – are built on the edges of the lagoon.
2 days drive to reach Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur “White Lake.” The track winds on mountainous and hilly grounds covered with forests of conifers, before to continue through a volcanic landscape as you enter the Arkhangai region, one of the nicest in Mongolia. Crossing of high altitude passes and numerous halts along the way. Encounter with a nomad family.
Drive to Tsenkher to take an afternoon bath in the hot water springs. Its sulphurous water springs out at 86.5°C and is renowned for its medicinal virtues.
Arrival to Kharkhorum, Genghis Khan’s legendary imperial city and visit of Erdene Zuu and 108 stupas, Mongolia’s most important Buddhist monastery. The monastery dates back to the 16th C. and was built on the ruins of the ancient imperial city
Last stop on the road back to Ulaanbaatar. Before to arrive to Khustai Nuruu, halt to visit Uvgun Temple in Khugnu Khan Natural Park. Khugnu Khan’s ecosystem is the result of the encounter between steppe and desert, and is also nicknamed ‘Little Gobi.’ Departure for Khustain Nuruu in the afternoon. The park is renowned for the successful reinsertion of the mythical Prjewalski horses. Evening observation of the horses in their pastures and walk through the forests of larches.
Drive back to UB where you arrive early afternoon. Back to the hotel and session at the spa to recover from the trek. Shopping for souvenirs and cashmeres followed by diner in town. Farewell diner in town with your interpreter and driver.
